Vascular assessment using PeriFlux 5000

Non-healing wounds

Chronic, non-healing wounds are problematic not only for the affected patient, but also for healthcare system due to long hospitalization, slow healing and a high risk of recurrence. Several factors influence the wound-healing process including tissue oxygenation surrounding the wound. An adequate oxygen supply is essential and dependent on both a functioning macrocirculation and a local skin microcirculation.

PeriFlux System 5000 has proved to be a valuable tool for wound evaluation. By combining its different modules, several commonly used objective tests such as toe pressures, ankle pressures, ankle-brachial index (ABI) and transcutaneous oxygen are easily carried out and the results may assist in determining whether a wound will heal spontaneously or not. In fact, key documents such as the Inter-Society Consensus for the Management of Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) (TASC II), recommend all patients with foot ulcers to have an objective assessment of their vascular status to exclude ischemia. Other expert panels (Transcutaneous Oximetry in Clinical Practice: Consensus statements from an expert panel based on evidence.) routinely use transcutaneous oxygen for wound assessment.
