The endothelium is the thin layer of cells lining the interior of every vessel in the circulatory system. It plays a central role in processes such as blood pressure regulation. Endothelial dysfunction is characterized by a disturbed endothelium-dependent vasodilation and decreased bioavailability of nitric oxide. It has been observed in several diseases and has been widely studied as it is often an early disease event in these.
Through its modularity, PeriFlux System 5000 offers a simple, operator-independent solution to study the endothelium at different levels. Using the same instrument and software, it is possible to study NO-dependent vasodilation as a response to local heating, iontophoresis of vasoactive drugs and post-occlusive reactive hyperemia.
